What is a credit card surcharge?

A surcharge is a small fee added to a customer’s total only when they pay with a credit card.

It allows your business to recover the cost of credit card acceptance rather than paying it yourself.

Debit cards, cash, and checks are not surcharged.

Is surcharging legal?

Yes. Credit card surcharging is legal in most U.S. states when it follows the rules set by Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express.

Can I surcharge debit or prepaid cards?

No. Surcharges apply only to credit cards.

Debit and prepaid cards—whether run as credit or debit—cannot be surcharged under card-brand rules.

How much can I charge as a surcharge?

Most programs allow a maximum of up to 3%, but you can only charge what equals your true cost of acceptance.

FeeShift automatically calculates this to ensure you stay within guidelines. This fee goes directly to the bank.

Debit can not be legally surcharged. The business still pays the transaction fee for debit at 1%+$0.25

What disclosures are required?

Card networks require merchants to:

  • Notify their processor before enabling surcharging.
  • Display clear signage at the point of entry and point of sale.
  • Show the surcharge amount on the customer’s receipt and online checkout screen.

What’s the difference between a surcharge and a convenience fee?

A surcharge is added when a customer pays with a credit card.

A convenience fee is charged for an alternative payment channel (like paying by phone or web).

They are not the same, and FeeShift ensures the correct structure for your business.

Cash discount programs mark up all prices and give a discount for cash/debit payments.

FeeShift is cleaner and more transparent—it only adds a surcharge to credit transactions, not across the board.

Do I need to register with Visa or Mastercard to start?

Yes, card brands require your processor to register the surcharge setup.

FeeShift handles all registration and compliance steps on your behalf before activation.

Do I need new equipment?

Yes, We supply the device at no upfront cost and is included in your SaaS Monthly Fee.

How fast can I go live?
